Funk Saxophone Quartets
Masterclass/Play-Along CD
by Skip Spratt

Welcome to this “Funk for Four” Masterclass and play-along CD for Saxophone Journal. As the name implies, this recording features four saxophones in a not-so-traditional quartet setting. Playing these quartets presents an opportunity for saxophonists to challenge themselves while developing greater stylistic versatility.
This masterclass is a follow-up to the “Funk Duets for Saxophone” published in the May/June 2010 issue of Saxophone Journal. The focus at that time was to lay the foundation for understanding and appreciating funk saxophone playing within the duet setting. Now, those same four songs have been expanded to a quartet setting with optional drum set background.
The concepts of time, feel and space were addressed in the original text for the “Funk Duets.” A condensed recap has been provided here before going into the making of these quartets.
