A Jazz Suite For Sax Duets
composed by Ralph Martino
Masterclass/Play-Along CD
by Frank Bongiorno
|
Jazz Suite for Saxophone Duet is a group of seven pieces for alto and baritone saxophones or two E-flat saxophones written by Ralph Martino. A Maryland native, Martino received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music composition from the Manhattan School of Music, and has composed, as well as, arranged for numerous instrumental and vocal combinations, including a piece he wrote in 1989 for tenor saxophone and piano titled Iberian Sketches. Martino has worked as a staff arranger and engraver for Hal Leonard, and was a staff composer and arranger for over twenty years with the US Navy Band until his retirement in 1996.
Published in 1999, the Jazz Suite is intended as a set of jazz duets for alto and baritone saxophone, or two E-flat saxophones. The suite’s seven movements are in varying styles and tempos, including moderate to fast swing feels, funky, bossa nova, and a jazz waltz.
