Sonata For Baritone Saxophone
Walter Hartley, Composer

Masterclass/Play-Along CD
by James Romain

Hello and welcome to this Saxophone Journal Masterclass CD. I’m Jim Romain, Associate Professor of Saxophone at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and I’m very pleased to be here to perform and discuss a wonderful work by composer Walter Hartley, the Sonata for Baritone Saxophone and Piano. On the CD, you’ll hear a complete performance of the work that I recorded with my collaborator, Dr. Nicholas Roth, Associate Professor of Piano at Drake University. You’ll also have the chance to listen in on a conversation between Walter Hartley and me, and I’ll be offering some suggestions that I hope will be useful to you in preparing the work for performance. Dr. Roth has also recorded a play-along track to accompany you on the first two pages of the first movement, so that you have an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the piece.
