This is a MUST HAVE 87-page method book written by Steven Mauk, who is Professor of Saxophone at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. The purpose of this book is to share some ideas about preparing the human mind and body for playing the saxophone. The chapters include: 1. The Daily Warm-Up, 2. Stretching Exercises, 3. A Base Warm-Up Routine, 4. Specialized Warm-Ups, 5. Supplemental Materials. This book contains lots of music playing examples including an intonation study, finger exercises, chromatic scale passages, wide leap exercises, extended scale patterns, altissimo chromatic scales, blues scales, diminished scales, the ii-V pattern, fourth patterns, doubling tongue exercise, growl technique, false fingering exercise, quarter-tone exercise, multiphonics, AND MORE!

In the words of Steven Mauk, "It's surprising how some saxophonists don't understand the concept of a daily warm-up routine. When I ask students what they do to warm up each day, I often hear something like, 'Oh, I don't really do any warm-up," or "Sometimes I play major scales as fast as possible."

BY CHRIS VADALA
$19.95 + $4.95 priority mail
Complete with recomended fingering patterns and detailed studies, composed by Chris Vadala, this 80 page method book contains 32 individual etudes. This mixing of instrument usage, and stylized playing in each etude, guarantees the doubler a good practice routine and workout. The etudes include mixed themes such as "major, minor, and augmented arpeggio figures," "Dixieland clarinet to jazz-rock saxophone in Baroque style," "the use of subtone on saxophone plus intonation and lip flexibility on flute," "classical style palm key problems for sax-left/right combinations for clarinet, flute embouchure after playing clarinet," "slurred intervals over a wide range for all three doubles," and many more technical issues of concern to the woodbe doubler.

As stated by Chris Vadala, "...To be a woodwind artist in this day and age is to be a doubler. Today's market for woodwind playing is competitive, and versatility is more of a necessity than an option. There is a definite need for materials which deal with a variety of music; hence the mixture of classical, jazz, and commercial styles in this collection of exercises."
